Wacom Texture Sheet Medium - Standard

Exactly what the title says. It's been the better part of a year since I upgraded to this new tablet and replacement texture sheet, so this is more of a long-term review. Before writing this review, I went ahead and compared the surfaces of my old Intuos 4 & 5 with the current Intuos Pro with the smooth sheet thrown on it. As far as "tooth" goes, there is no real discernable difference between the unworn texture in the corners of my old Intuos 4 & 5 and the Intuos Pro smooth sheet. This includes nib wear on the current Pro Pen 2. Nib wear on the smooth sheet has turned out to be basically identical to the Intuos 4 & 5. Which is surprising, considering the Pro Pen 2 uses a nib roughly half the diameter of the old Grip Pen, for some reason. Usually thinner material = quicker wear, so I'm not really sure how that's turned out to be the same as well. One thing I've noticed is that the current Intuos Pro sheets have a bit more of a "rubbery" quality in terms of drag feel. Almost like a layer of hard rubber compound rather than a sheet of hard plastic. It's a subtle difference in feel, but it's there. I've heard that Wacom ditched the slicker, hard plastic material of previous generations for a harder-wearing rubber-based compound on the sheets for their current iterations of the Intuos Pro. If that's true, then it would certainly explain the subtle difference in feel. But this is unconfirmed rumor, so take it for what you will. But if that is indeed the case, it would certainly explain a lot. This new material they're using for the texture sheets has proven extremely resilient. After 6-8 months of almost daily use, my smooth texture sheet looks like the older Intuos4/5 after a month-ish of semi-intensive use. The smooth texture sheet just has a bit of subtle scuffing near the center after all of this. Also, I'm still using my original nib, which hasn't worn noticeably since the initial session with the default medium sheet. So I don't see myself needing to buy replacements for either in a very long time. Basically, Wacom has struck an interesting balance with the materials used for the smooth sheet and the narrower nibs: drastically increased durability, enough drag to not feel like you're slicking around on glass, but not enough texture/grip to wear your narrower nibs prematurely. (Assuming you're using the smooth surface) I just wish Wacom would start treating these smooth sheets as their included defaults instead of the medium textured ones, considering this is by far the only real gripe I've heard anyone bringing up against the current Intuos Pro line at all.

The Intuos Pro 4 comes with a textured pad and it has a great "paper like" feel. If you're coming from traditional media you'll feel right at home. But for most of us the last time we drew or painted on paper was a long long time ago... Personally I was missing that smooth digital feeling of my old Intuos, having less friction just feels more consistent with 2D/3D digital art. Also the textured pad that comes with the Pros tends to wear down the nibs much faster than the smooth pad (I used the same nib on an Intuos 2 for 10 years VS replacing a nib within a year for a Pro 4). Installation was easy but it was very disappointing that the removal of the original pad is permanent since it's soft and glued to the tablet (you can't store it for later if you change your mind), so if you want to go back to a textured pad, you'll have to buy another one... Honestly I have to agree with the other reviews, this should have come included with the tablet. Wacoms are better than the rest... cough... cough... Hu... ions, but they're overcharging for needless features, firs thing I did after getting a Pro 4 was to disable the touch features (garbage).

The difference between this and the standard one is night and day. The feeling of the standard was so uncomfortable to write with. It felt and sounded scratchy like you were writing with a dried out marker not to mention the super fast nib wear due to the excess friction... No Bueno. With the smooth, the standard plastic nibs fly on it and gives just the right amount of friction without the "scratchiness". Wacom wants to nickel and dime you by having you buy nibs as they wear down excessively. Don't event hesitate to purchase this if you don't like the feel of the standard texture sheet.
