Lightweight bright crisp OLED display!

I was mildly concerned that this 4K OLED display would not be bright enough at 400 nits but I was wrong. It’s brighter than my laptop display which I connect it to. It’s also amazingly light, making it a great travel companion in my backpack. The only minor complaint is that the two USB-C to USB-C cables are short (3’), making it difficult to reach the power adapter. I recommend buying a 100W 6’ power cable to use between the monitor and power adapter.

Awesome Portable Monitor

This is actually my first time writing a review on Amazon. I was so excited to finally have what I was looking for! So I hope to help out anyone thats struggling. Portable monitors seems to be a growing trend so not much precise information online. It took me some trial and error with different brands, both well known and third party but this one is it. Overall this monitor fits in everything that I was looking for in a portable monitor. Now to begin with my specific use case; I am a professional photographer, and at the moment a Computer Science student. I wanted a portable monitor that fits in all of my bags along with my laptop, allows me to do some photo and video editing (16" MacBook Pro), would connect to my cell phone via USB-C (iPhone 15 Pro), would allow portrait mode for coding projects, and would plug into Nintendo Switch without needing a dock. This is the one that delivered! So thank you so much ViewSonic for delivering! Some caveats to mention, One Cable USB-C works prefect with the MacBook Pro, even in 4K resolution. To use with Nintendo Switch or iPhone, the other USB-C port has to be connected to a power source. Wall outlet or PowerBank. (In my scenario I used and Anker PowerBank and it works!) This is will all portable monitors though, not just this one. So here's why I settled with this one. Pros: + Super lightweight! This screen is approximately 1.6lbs and will add nothing in weight for carrying. + Very Portable! 16" is a great size and it does a good job at being close to matching the MacBook Pro. + 16" OLED 4K screen (Its great to watch movies but don't expect it to replace a 65" 4K OLED TV). + 170 Degrees Visual from different angles (Consistent image quality from different angles). + 100% DCI-P3 coverage/most of Adobe RGB (which is great for color accuracy, photo and video editing) + Built in Portrait mode which is great for coding or editing (might need to level the stand) + Has a built in speaker (No, they are not strong but at least its provided, better than nothing) + 3.5mm Jack (plugs into a portable speakers with 3.5mm Jack or headphones) + Provides Power to devices (iPhone 15/Switch) that are connected via Wall Outlet or PowerBank. Cons: - 60hz only (would have been even better at 120hz to match my Mac, and maybe the Switch 2?) Probably asking for too much but would hav been the icing on the cake. - Expensive ~$500 (but to be honest it's not really a con, you get what you pay for and for it to do everything that I need without extra dongles. I'm perfectly fine with paying the price tag) Overall though I can't complain about this purchase; just being a little nitpicky. If ViewSonic decides to keep producing these and release a version with 120hz, I would buy it in a heartbeat but as of now it's perfect! Check out the attached photos for my use cases. -----| The only other well know brand I tried was the ASUS ZenScreen MB16QHG. Almost kept it too but I did not want to carry around with me additional dongles for my Switch: Pros: + 2K + 120hz + Built in Stand (Portrait mode too) + 3.5mm Jack + 100% DCI-P3 + Full HDMI Cable (Not Mini) + Great Portrait Mode Stand + Auto-Rotate (Windows Only) + Very Lightweight Cons: - It doest NOT connect the Nintendo Switch without a dock, then even with a dock connected the 16:10 aspect ratio doesn't not convert to 16:9 for gaming. It left the gameplay looking distorted and for me personally I wasn't a fan. - No built in speakers - Expensive while lacking features ~$400 -----| The only third party brand I tried was the UPERFECT 18" Gaming Monitor (Almost perfect). Would have kept it if I was just for gaming. But it doesn't fit all my bags, and having to constantly recalibrate it would have sucked. Pros: + 2K + 144hz + Connects to Nintendo Switch via USB-C without a dock + FreeSync + Both 16:9/16:10 + 100% DCI-P3 + Vesa Mount + Affordable ~$257 Cons: - 18" Screen not very portable. - Passible Portrait mode needs Vesa Mount Stand to be more stable. - Brightness settings reset when disconnected from power.

Very Readable screen

I have been using a hand made (with wood and notebook replacement monitor and a port adapter) for many many years now (before one could buy them ready made like this) and I have been patiently waiting for someone to make a portable monitor that is better than what I already have and Viewsonic finally made it happen, so I pulled the plug and bought one. The screen is very readable even at 3840x2160 at 100% At first I thought it was not turning on, but later learned that without the computer asking any pixels to light up, I cannot tell the difference. This OLED contrast will help a lot. Using it with my ThinkPad T15 with either my Thunderbolt connector or USB-C connector or HDMI connector worked flawlessly. The suggestion that it would supply power to my notebook at 60W seems a bit misleading. Maybe, not sure. The AC-DC adapter tops out at 60W and the monitor itself required SOME power and my notebook is expecting 65W, but it is working and charging regardless. I am thinking about using the shipping container and foam as a way to transport it to minimize damage. It is a nice box and just the right size with a place for everything, tho you cannot keep the cover attached. It has to go into the box last. My only grip so far is that there seems to be no way to increase the sound level. At 100% volume, when I compare the sound level via my notebook's speakers vs the monitor's speaker or the headset jack on the notebook vs the headset jack on the monitor, either way, the sound level on the monitor is very much lower and if I am in a noisy environment I am likely to be frustrated if I were to require sound from the monitor. At the moment, I do not see that happening as my notebook and my phone have respectable sound output and my external monitor never had sound and I never considered it to be a missing feature.

Good.

The best way to make sure you don't come home to a bugged monitor.

This is a fair review

I love ViewSonic monitors, I've used them for years. I have the VP16-OLED and I feel for 1080p this is the best portable monitor out there for input RGB, full dynamic range 10 bit color. I bought the VX16 4K OLED because I wanted a portable for native 4K media cunsumption but I have to give my honest opinion and it's not great as I expected for ViewSonic. First of all, no drivers for this available for Windows 11 from ViewSonic. The monitors included with their Win11 download excluded this model. This shows that even the company who sells the monitor doesn't fully support it. Contrast was good but far from the true black you get with the VP16-Oled model. I was able to set Nvidia control panel to RGB, Full and 10 bpc which was super but even at Full dynamic range blacks were not true black even in a dark room and there was considerably color banding when watching 1080p content such as Finding Dory, etc. This movie is great for grading monitors for color banding due to the many transitions in color in the ocean scenes. Lots of banding! Definitely not expected :(. HDR is also pretty bad. When enabled in Windows the display turns black and eventually connection is broken most of the time and when it eventually works the color looks washed out and most picture settings are disabled in this mode. Pretty useless. Seems response time was lagging in action scenes too. Overall the picture is pretty bad for a$500 4k OLED. I will stick with my INNOCN PU15-PRE 4K AMOLED portable which is factors better than the VX16 4K OLED in terms of features, color, dynamic range and response. I submitted some tickets to ViewSonic regarding these issues and if none are resolved I will return it. Sorry ViewSonic, I do like your other products but this one is sub par and needs more investment on your part. I gave it 3 stars to be fair because most still images look great on this monitor so picture editing is doable with this monitor once you download a sRGB or DCI-P3 icc profile from ICC's website.
