Wanted to upgrade 10+ yr 550w PSU to 850w & full modular an prior to upgrading video. Pros: Plenty of power, virtually silent, lots of cables & taps, decent length for ATX tower cases Cons: Cables are all flat ribbon and rather stiff. Hard to route out-of sight & block airflow more than round ones. Had to leave some "looping" thru airflow areas. How much more would round modular cables cost to make? Misc: First I ordered 850w of same brand as the 550w I was replacing that had worked well for 10+ yrs. I foolishly installed and carefully ran all cabling under, around & thru - It didn't boot - same everything the 550w had run - only got some MB RGB. Unhooked everything but 24 pin main - no boot. Tried 24 pin test jumper - no PSU fan start. Had to remove all, reinstall the 550w, request a refund and refuse an offer by someone with very little English and a bad phone connection to "help you troubleshoot" Asked her what she was doing in the Eighties when I was working with AS400s and early CPM computers - got immediate refund & RA. Purchased the Thermaltake 850w for $20 more than the first fiasco. It arrived in 2 days. Learned my lesson and test jumpered it first. Fan spun up and all 24 pins registered correct voltages. For good measure tested all other PSU modular taps too.

The Good: Overall this product seemed like a solid PS, bought to build a new Home / Gaming PC. No issues with the install or initial power up of the system. Had all the needed cables and they seemed good quality. I would have probably given the product 5 stars if I had reviewed it before now. The Bad: However, a few mornings ago, about two weeks after I built the system, I went to power on the computer, and it was completely dead, no fans, led's lights on the case or mother board, etc., just completely dead. Checked surge protector, switch to a different outlet, etc. No indication on the surge protector that it had been triggered. Just the supply was totally dead. I contacted support, they directed me to go their web to fill out an RMA request, which I did. A couple days later I got an RMA number, and shipping instructions, WHICH DID NOT INCLUDE any prepaid shipping labels. Further I was told to expect 2-4 weeks before I get something back. i.e. shipping time, evaluation time, and return shipping time. So from a price comparision stand point this is now a much more expensive PS than I thought when shopping for a PS. I.e. I pay for return shipping, down time of 2-4 weeks, my time to uninstall and reinstall. Then hopefully it works and stay working for more than 2 weeks. updated good news: And the reason for 4 stars vs 2 or 3. I called tech support to bitch / confirm that they did not pay for shipping, and the were good enough (even though I was just outside of 30 day from purchase date) to send me prepaid shipping lables as a customer accomidation. i.e. lowering the cost back to a resonable level. While I realize that some percentage of all products suffer premature failures, how a company handles this is key to their reputation. In the end ThermalTake stepped up.

I wanted a PSU to handle anything I wanted to buy. My last PSU served me well for many years and the power connectors are changing especially for video cards. I'm due for a new video card and wanted to make sure I had the power and connectors ready. 600W to video card is overkill for a planned 7800 XT expected to use 250W but who doesn't like having breathing room? I believe a 650W PSU is the minimum recommended for a 7800 XT. The PSU is quiet and I've had no issues with it. I do wish the motherboard and video card power cables were a bit longer so it's easier to route through some cable management features in the case.

This Thermaltake 850W PSU is for my new game PC. I decided to order this GF1 850w because not many within the price range with same performance. It's a value set due to packs of its wires accessories. So far it's working well.
