I have been in the computer business professionally since 1994. StarTech is one of those companies that makes reliable but somewhat boring computer peripherals. They tend to avoid jumping on the latest and greatest "thang" and wait until they see a peripheral with staying power. That's what this dock is. These days I have all of my customers using external docks to back up their servers to and I have tried out a number of docks from different manufacturers. The early USB2 docks often had problems with larger disks, and being recognized by different operating systems and so on. But while the Startech docks may be boring, boring is exactly what you want in backup solutions. Reliable and boring! One thing I will caution on is do NOT buy this dock (or ANY other USB3 dock) if you only have USB2 ports on your computer. Get a USB3 card if you buy this for that setup. In theory USB is supposed to "switch down" to the slower speed but with backup docks when you are doing writes to the disk that last for hours, the USB3 docks will often disconnect on a USB2 port. Ebay is full of used USB2 docks for that scenario. I particularly like the "soft" power button on the front of this dock. I have used the cheaper docks that use small mechanical rocker switches on the back and I've had those switches fail. It is sometimes the case when switching the disk out that you will have to power cycle the dock to get the computer to recognize the disk change and that's easy with this dock. Lastly it is important with this dock and with all docks that the disk is completely inserted and makes positive contact with the dock fingers.

Does what I need it to do, fairly light weight but solid enough. Only downside for me is the length of the power cord which is a bit short for my computer desk but would probably be fine for most people.

This is a good hard drive dock, but I like some of StarTech's older designs (previous USB 2.0 models) better. Keep in mind this dock has a "soft" power button, meaning it is not a hard toggle that stays on. If the power goes out or you remove a drive while powered up, the dock will not come back on unless you physically press the power button again. No issues out of this dock aside from a couple Seagate drives I have acting quirky (showing up in OS, but having issues reading partitions). This only seems to happen with these 2 specific drives (ST500LM000 and ST500DM002) on this dock, they work fine with a Sabrent SATA adapter or on an older StarTech dock. I've put over 50 hard drives (mix of WD, Seagate, and Toshiba) in this dock, so I think it is just some controller firmware weirdness.

Came in way faster then expected and works great. Just backed up my sata 1 hardrive from an old laptop using a 3.0 ss usb slot and the transfer rate was really fast. Great for those in computer repairs or just need something to back up their harddrives. Works as intended
