Good switch, could be even better

I looked off and on for weeks to try and get a switch that helped me get a good amount of 10GbE ports, with both SFP+ and RJ45(10GbaseT). I liked the management of the QNAP, and other simpler web management, so that's a big plus for me on this one. I know a bunch of the pro-sumer (pro consumer) gear for 10GbE seems somewhat newer or recent (though we've had 10GbE in corporate/enterprise IT for well over a decade), so it's rather expensive and not a million options in specs and costs, but it's getting better. So for me this was the best bang for the buck so far, as of around May/June 2023. It's combo 10GbE ports for both SFP+ and 10GbaseT is awesome, as I have some of each to connect. I'd like to see more ports, like 16 or 24. I'd like to see an option in the web interface to have 2 ports be trunk ports to link to a "core" or upstream switch and carry my vlans, giving me an effectively 20GbE uplink. So far the build seems solid, no issues yet. Sometimes runs a bit warm to hot, so I wish it would run cooler, but this is pretty common I find across networking gear.

Can't decide between 10Gbits on SFP+ or 10Gbits on RJ45? This switch has got you covered either way

I've been meaning to buy a proper 10Gigabit/s switch for years now, but was hesitating because I normally buy Cisco, but I hadn't made my mind up between 10Gbits on SFP+ fiber or 10Gbits on RJ45 copper. With this switch, you get the choice of both, and the necessary throughput in terms of processing power to sustain all ports at this speed. Many of the ports are auto-detecting, and also include the intermediate speeds in-between 1 and 10 Gigabits/s, which are 2.5 and 5 Gigabits/s. The rackmounting ears it comes with are very sturdy and don't feel like an afterthought. There's a dedicated management port on the back, in case you don't want to manage the switch from a device on the same LAN as everything else, and basic setup can be done through a COM port, if you're used to that way of initial setup. There's also an optional SSH command-line interface. Firmware appears to be regularly updated. All in all, am impressed.

Security 101 Failure - so support to update Certificates

In todays market of heightened concerns over cyber security it is surprising to find a £600+ switch that has no intuitive was to install a certificate for TLS. The management console has the facility to force TLS 2.0 and 80 to 443 redirects. However this then forces the use of the already installed QNAP certificate that has no intermediary certificate installed in browsers by default. Regardless I want to install a certificate from our CA and not one from QNAP. Even Synology now has the API for Lets Encrypt, its clearly an industry issue that is important. In plain English this means it's a poor show by QNAP for security. Put this device in an Enterprise LAN and within seconds its picked up by Qualys or Tenable vulnerability scanners as having a dodgy certificate. Its so easy to sort this out, it takes minutes to create a CSR and then install a new certificate on any network equipment, EXCEPT this switch. I shouldn't have to console into the CLI to install the certificate. If SSH were available I could do that across the LAN, but it's not. Perhaps I should connect to 8080 and root the box as mentioned in previous reviews. For putting 10GbE on RJ45 into your shed, this box is rather expensive, for using the benefits of 10GbE over SFP or RJ45 you must be 'switched' on enough to know what you are doing, So not being able to install a new certificate in an intuitive way leads me to believe that security is not a top priority for QNAP as this is a 101 basic hygiene factor. I was going to get a couple more to trunk and the only thing that stopped me was Microsoft dropping teaming in Windows 10 Workstation. It's given me time to reflect on this kit and bluntly I would suggest that you pause before considering this kit.
