OPEN BOX - StarTech.com 3 5-inch SATA III Hard Drive Enclosure

Windows11proミニPCに接続して家庭用NASとして利用しています。 RAID1モードで利用しています。 Windows11側からはただのHDDとして見えます。 HDDの状態は全面のLEDで確認する形です。 普段はスリープ状態でアクセスがあるときだけ起動するようにしていますが問題ありません。 十分目的は果たせています。

パソコンをこれから覚えたいという叔母のために設置しました。画像含む思い出の写真を保存するにデータが保護できること、またＰＣを使うときにだけ起動するような商品が条件です。NASが理想でしたが、操作や管理が必要かつ24時間稼働させる必要性もないことから、パソコン起動とともにUSB連動で動くもの、またRAID1で手元にある3.5inch_HDDを使うにも、本製品が最適でした。取り付けも用意、設置後のHDD初期化が容量によって時間はかかりますが、取説含めてRAID設定もわかりやすく、稼働音も私の感覚では静かな方です。ただ、モニター横には置きたくない程度の音はしますが、叔母にはあまり気になることもなかったようです。あとは継続利用にて、何かあれば追加レビューいたします。

Ich habe es zurückgesendet, weil die Lüfter zu laut sind und dann ist mir später aufgefallen, dass USB 3.2 gen 1 auch ein bisschen altbacken ist. Für einen etwaigen RAID-0 Betrieb hätte ich mir USB 3.2 gen 2 gewünscht. Wenn der laute Lüfter nicht gewesen wäre, hätte ich es behalten. Also, im Vergleich zu meinen anderen 2 Startech Gehäusen (S351BU313), die ich mit diesem Gehäuse konsolidieren wollte, ein deutlicher Rückschritt.

(S352BU33RER - 2-bay eSATA/USB3) Nice enclosure, working great with with eSATA and TrueNAS in JBOD mode for a ZFS mirrored pool (2x IronWolf Pro 4TB HDD). I've not seen any issues when testing with USB2 and USB3 as well. Initially, it came with firmware 31.12.01.03 which does NOT support SMART nor does it support SATA3 transfers (meaning it was limited to 300MB/s transfers with my IronWolf Pro HDD). However, I found jms562_031.021.001.004.zip firmware online for the JMS562 chipset (sorry, can't post a link but Google it - it's on the hdsentinel site) and this firmware enables not just full SMART support but also enables SATA3 transfers so now the enclosure supports 600MB/s transfers (my testing has confirmed that IO performance has indeed doubled). It's perfectly OK with the stock firmware, but it's even better once the firmware is updated. I'd give it 5 stars if it shipped with the updated firmware but as it's now an EOL product that's not going to happen. I have contacted StarTech and suggested they host the updated firmware on their product support page (which they said they will consider).

Note: If you buy this unit, download the latest "Start Guide" user manual from StarTech Support. The "Start Guide" manual included in the box shipped to me was dated 7/25/2016 and had poor instructions. The downloaded manual was dated 8/3/2022 and had more complete instructions for configuring RAID. Once I got the complete instructions, I can now say that this RAID enclosure works as expected. I tested RAID 1 (Mirror) on my windows 10 computer. After copying files to the mirrored drives, I removed one of the drives (simulating a failure) and tested if I could access the files with a different USB/SATA adapter. No problem! I also tried using the RAID enclosure on my Linux computer and found no problems. I also tested RAID 0 (Stripe). As expected, the transfer rate was twice as fast as RAID 1 and the drives provided double the capacity but no redundancy. I will be using RAID 1 (Mirror) for backup purposes. My only complaint is that the drives go to sleep quickly when used with windows 10 and I have not yet found a way to delay this. For backup purposes this is not a problem but would be a problem if you want to use it as a working drive. I highly recommend this RAID Drive enclosure if you have a pair of 3.5" hard drives and intend to do mirrored backups.
