Asus ROG Strix Arion - Storage Enclosure

Just dropped the SSD in and set it up in Windows 10. Very solid housing. Goes great with my TUF laptop.

When choosing a device like this, there are 3 things that matter: build quality, compatibility, and speed. 1) Build Quality: This device does not disappoint. The entire body is made of aluminum, and it has thermal pads inside the top housing which cover both the memory and the controller of the SSD. It also comes with a rubber surround which protects the outside, even though honestly the device seems solid enough without it. My one concern is that the mechanism it uses to hold the top cover in place is held together with just a spring - I suspect that if it dropped at the wrong angle that the cover will come loose. I would have preferred a screw-down mechanism to keep it in place. 2) Compatibility: I have tested 4 different SSDs from 4 different manufacturers, and they all seem to work. It does also connect to Mac, Windows, and Linux with no measurable difference in throughput (though you may have to use different formats for each one). 3) Speed: This device claims a 10Gbps (1250 MB/s) transfer rate, which is the maximum throughput for USB 3.2. Using a Samsung 980 Pro SSD, it was able to reach ~950MB/s transfer. The 'missing' 100MB/s can easily be accounted for as USB protocol overhead, meaning this device is maxing out the USB connection. This is all that we can ask for. The only way for you to get anything faster is to get a Thunderbolt compatible enclosure instead (40Gbps), but your computer has to support it. If you need that extra speed, however, you will already know it.

Solid case, and easy to install, but you do need to know how to initialize a drive. You can't just slap a new SSD into it and use it.

A solid NVMe enclosure that works with my NVMe that I pulled from my prebuild gaming PC. The case is pretty heavy and feels like it can take a drop and be fine, although I would not recommend doing a drop test. The locking fastener is plastic and does not give me much confidence in being strong enough for an accidental drop but the way the enclosure is designed makes me not worry about it too much. Overall 5 stars.
