OBS game station

I have some consoles next to my PC, and my buddies like to stream games for friends to show off new games or cool tricks and stuff. My PS4 can stream natively, but only YT and twitch. I want to stream on discord for friends. So I got this, messed with it for a while to get the setting just right in OBS. IF YOU NEED OBS HELP AND SEE THIS: 1. Add New Capture Card to your scene. It's towards the bottom of the list which is why it's hard to find 2. Once added, a pop-up will give you a preview of what the card is capturing. Take this opportunity to adjust brightness and contrast settings if you need to. 3. Leave the setting in the pop-up window default for now. The main changes won't happen here anyways 4. Setup your audio so that the capture card you added is operating as both the Output Source and Monitor. This should get the audio to come through OBS 5. Right-click the stream preview on the right side, I think it's called the Projector. You want to full screen this. 6. Play games This will allow you to play your console by using the OBS as your TV and telling the PC to give you audio console audio. There should not be any input lag or latency to worry about, as long as you are using a USB 3 port on your PC. I made a mistake one day, and the USB 2.0 introduced noticeable input lag. My only recommendation: couple this with an HDMI switch that detects the video source and automatically change the input for you. This allows multiple consoles to feed into the 1 capture card without needing to swap around HDMIs. Turns your PC into the ultimate gaming rig. Of course you can record gameplay too, but I got this for the streaming. I'm not recording badass plays for YouTube and what not. Get this thing. Best balance I could find between price and features. One of the only devices in this price range that offers 4K60fps passthru. My Consoles don't need the 4K, but that extra wiggle room inpower is what helps reassure me that this thing is more than capable of handling whatever I throw at it today.

Records in 4K and HDR, but software needs more work

This is an early review. I may update it later. First, this does record 4K and HDR sources. But you need to remember some things to get it to work. The manual clearly explains that you need a USB-C cable and outlet that supports a 10 GB connection. What they didn't tell you -- or tell you clearly -- that if your USB-C cable OR outlet doesn't support those speeds, the device will still work but at reduced quality and it will flash yellow on the front. The included cable works; high-quality cables you bought somewhere else may not work. What this means is that likely you will need a higher-end laptop or desktop computer. I am using a Lenovo Legion laptop with an AMD Ryzen processor. Also, there is no separate power connection. Your USB-C outlet must also support power delivery (labeled USB PD on the computer). My Lenovo laptop has two USB-C outlets, but only one had power delivery. Avermedia is lacking in software support too. You must use OBS and you need to watch a Youtube video on their website for the correct settings to record in HDR. If you are having trouble with changing any of the necessary settings in OBS, make sure you are using a good USB-C cable. For days I was having trouble with OBS until I finally realized I was using a USB-C cable that, while good enough for everything I once used it for, was not good enough for this. There is a promise of more support coming. I hope the company lives up to that promise. As expected, it will not record sources with HDCP. You will have to turn it off on your gaming console or find a device to strip that out of the HDMI cable.

Finally a capture device that supports this generation of consoles!

This is the first capture card to have the necessary 4k120 passthrough to allow for recording your XBox Series X/S or PS5 while playing games using both VRR and 120hz modes. The card also supports HDR recording though the format is P010(HDR) which is a format I was totally unfamiliar with and so it took em a while to actually capture videos without them looking washed out. The pros for this device is that it just works. OBS supported it without any issues though you need to make sure that your PC has a suitable USC C port available. The manual says that you need a USB C 3.2 port though I think mine is a 3.1 port and I had no issues with recording videos. Oddly while the USB C 3.1 port worked fine on my PC. The same type of port on a Mac did not allow me to use 4k60 recording. So your mileage may vary if you are using something lower than the recommended 3.2 port. The cons are that it was surprisingly difficult to find the Avermedia software to control the lighting on the device and adjust it's settings. Instead of downloading the version at the bottom of the product page you should in fact click the show more link and select the newest versions from there. Why Avermedia don't ensure the correct link is on the product page is a mystery. Overall this is a great product and I look forward to seeing if Elgato create a response to this. I am also looking forward to Avermedia updating their stand alone product (the one that records to sd cards directly) with the new HDMI 2.1 capability. I suspect I would happily get that version instead of this one if it had been available. Like many of you. I prefer to just play and record the footage without having to check a PC, set up OBS etc etc. Then transfer the data to something like Black Magick for editing and upload. Conclusion. Is this device worth the money. Yes with one exception. Currently there is zero support for ultra wide formats so if you happen to have an ultrawide display. Then steer clear until the promised support for such displays is actually available. Although Avermedia have promised they will support these displays. A promise if worth very little when your hard earned money is involved.
