Great unit. Simple and cost effective

I had a whirlwind romance with this drive. Things didn't work out the way we'd expected, but what we have now is more stable than ever, so maybe it was all worth it. It was love at first sight. The drive seemed perfect! Blazing speed and tons of capacity without breaking the bank? I was compelled to pick it up; I couldn't have stopped myself, even if I'd tried. (I did not read Amazon reviews before doing so. That would have been like interrogating someone's exes, and who DOES that?) The first two months were amazing. After I'd outgrown my previous drive, all I really wanted was a huge drive with transfer speeds somewhere north of a turtle's. This drive was all that and more. I'd never been into copying files -- it just didn't seem like my thing -- but this drive got me used to the idea. Transferring gigabytes upon gigabytes of data in mere seconds seemed so wrong, but felt so right. One could even say that I liked it. But somewhere down the line, things changed. The drive started ignoring my mount(2) calls. No matter how often I tried plugging it in, it would spin and spin and spin but ultimately refuse to show up in Finder, instead leaving cryptic messages in my Console. I tried asking it what was wrong, but it offered no explanation for its change of heart. I got so desperate that I tried plugging it into a Windows machine -- a WINDOWS MACHINE! -- to no avail. It threw a nasty error message, and that was that. We weren't on speaking terms for a few months afterwards. I'd poured my heart, soul, and data into this drive, and all of a sudden it wouldn't even talk to me. I felt betrayed. I wanted to hold a grudge forever, but that's no way to live life. First I considered calling the drive's parents in Buffalo, but they didn't seem like they'd be very helpful. So after consulting some sympathetic Amazon reviews, I tried something different: A simple enclosure. Maybe I could salvage a meaningful, fulfilling USB 3.0 friendship by tearing down my drive's risqué, RAM-cached façade. My gamble worked. The 3 TB heart of our relationship, 50.4% filled with our shared experiences, has lived on happily for a few months now. Perhaps our glitzy, volatile(-memory) courtship was doomed to fail. Perhaps that just wasn't right for us. Perhaps it was blinding me to what was most important.

Not easily recognized when plugged in compared to other brands such as Seagate. Speed is on par with other external HDD. I'm happy with my purchase, but would not recommend it or buy again.
