Transcend Industrial CompactFlash Memory Card - 32 GB, Red (TS32GCF170)

I have some old computers with old IDE hard drives. Somehow, they all survived, but I don't like resting on my laurels. Sure, it's cool to say an old computer is still all original, but mechanical failure is inevitable, and they certainly aren't getting any faster as time goes on. Enter the CompactFlash card. These things are effectively IDE SSDs, minus the hassle of finding an IDE SSD that still works at a decent price. And these industrial variants act like normal block devices, meaning any OS that supports IDE hard drives will support these out of the box with a simple CF-to-IDE adapter board (e.g. the ones StarTech sells). And that "adapter board" bit is important: unlike SD cards and SATA drives, you do not need a converter board. These things natively support the IDE protocol, unlike SD and SATA devices, which do not speak the IDE protocol and thus need a converter/translator (as opposed to a simple mechanical adapter) for use in IDE systems, which can cause difficult to debug problems in certain use cases. Not only are these cards effectively a drop-in replacement for IDE HDDs, they are superior to the drives they replace because: - Being SSDs, random access speeds are insanely fast and provide performance improvements in almost every use case - Being SSDs, there are no moving parts to seize up or otherwise fail - They have ECC (to reduce the potential for data corruption) - They feature wear leveling (to increase the lifespan of the device) - They can operate in much harsher conditions than most HDDs made today, and certainly in much harsher conditions than the HDDs these will be replacing - SMART data is provided, which some old IDE HDDs never supported - Because there are no moving parts, you can put them wherever you want - no need to screw them into place, you can just leave them hanging around inside the case The cost per gigabyte is certainly higher than normal HDDs, but these provide speeds and a peace of mind that old HDDs never can. I highly recommend them as a drop-in upgrade for older machines when combined with a CF-to-IDE adapter board. Just remember to disable any scheduled disk defragmentation when you install them, or it'll significantly reduce the lifespan of the drive. The only potential con is the use of MLC instead of SLC, but given the trend towards QLC over TLC in modern consumer SSDs, I'm not complaining. As always, make sure to run f3probe or similar tools to ensure you received the correct capacity drive. I doubt enough people buy these things for scammers to make much money off of knockoff drives (and I have never received a CF card that misrepresents its capacity), but you can never be too careful.

I restore and play with old computers for a hobby. When you pair this with a CF to IDE adapter, you can use modern solid-state storage in old computers. This really speeds up the device, even older 386/486 machines! Perfect for old Windows 95/98/XP/2000 machines with failing spinning-platter hard drives. Just make sure you buy one of these "Industrial" cards, because only they are designed to show up as a proper block storage device. The computer doesn't know it's any different from a regular spinning-platter hard drive.

Using this as a hard drive via an IDE-44 adapter. It seems fast and reliable, and has plenty of space available.

En el primer envió me vino una tarjeta que solo reconocía 7,8 gb. me la cambiaron y tardo un poco en venir se suponía que me la entregaban en 24 horas pero tardo 5 días, la nueva no reconoce las 32 gb que dice tener sino que reconoce 29,5 gb. lo cual no es correcto.

La carte ne fonctionne pas avec un 5D MarkII. après formatage avec le boitier, elle n'affiche alors qu'une capacité de 7,37Go. J'ai donc perdu une soirée de travail sur un spectacle grâce à Transcend (Industrial ???). C'est la deuxième carte Transcend qui me pose des problème. Aucune fiabilité sur cette marque.
