Excellent Camera.

Great camera, just do some different senerios for lighting. I found out during testing for lighting in my basement the tube lights created some strange effects and created false alarms and keep lights from going directly into the cameras I placed sound sensitivity levels on the cameraI to be less sensitive because the crickets in the basement set off a lot of alarms. I also like keeping the IR off because I had enough lightning from motion sensor lights to have the all the time color even at night by solar powered LED street lights. Now without the street light effects people walking by would ghost out which would make it impossible to make out anything. IR is not the best yet definitely not the worst. There is a slight learning curve yet lots YouTube videos to help in the discovery process. Bonus is you can place a micro flash card in the camera and have a backup for when you lose your internet. I’m using it right now on a Synology NAS DS723+ on a MacBook Pro M1 Great that it comes with its own license so you’ll be able to use it on any Synology NAS you may upgrade to. Wish it was 4K yet still impressive. I have a 4 K camera on my NAS and it’s great yet the settings on the Synology camera is much better than the 4K just not the quality of video. Awesome camera, little pricey, yet because Synology is like Apple in its platform and design you can understand the in and outs of Synology. Since this is Synology’s 1st go at cameras you can expect many improvements on future cameras. Placed cameras outside and cameras have a clock ticking sound I first thought it came from the clock ticking in the basement until I moved the camera outside and still have the sound. Sounds like it’s in the background.

Have purchased 4 so far...

I purchased one from Amazon initially. After using for a week-ish, i end up purchasing 3 more from another vendor who was significantly cheaper. Pros: - a decently sharp picture with nice details. - really good sound and sound detection - motion sensing is above average with capability to setup detection zones - very easy to install and setup. Using PoE option myself - Plug & Play with Synology surveillance station (SS). Seamless. - No extra SS license required. - night vision is OK, not great, but not terrible either - Support secured comms (SSL) - H.265 support - Edge recording support (offline to local SD card) - automatic firmware updating option - NTP time support Cons: - cost. significantly higher than competitors - does not handle light distortion (from flood lights behind the cameras) very well. - night vision isn't that great, not terrible not not great either - motion detection is overly sensitive toward center of camera with outer area being invisible. - sound detection set off by slightest breeze - Motion detection often misses start of the motion (e.g. when a dog walks by, i see them half way across the patio vs when they come into view) Overall, a good camera and if you're not educated in surveillance systems, a good plug-n-play option for Synology NAS. Once costs stabilize and return to what they were at launch.. or cheaper.. they are a good option. I'll finish my system when prices on these come back down to earth.

A great first offering from Synology - very easy to install

I maintain a surveillance system for a non-profit entity. We have about 14 interior cameras and a little over 20 exterior. I installed this system before Synology branded cameras were announced so I used primarily Hikvision and Reolink. I've been having a heck of a time with the Reolink cameras dying after being outside for any significant amount of time in rain so I needed something else to replace them with. Having installed all these cameras, and maintained the system for about a year, I can tell you there is a significant amount of time wasted in configuring and maintaining each camera in two places (Surveillance Station and the Camera Web UI). Ensuring settings are synchronized properly between the two systems, and updating firmware on the cameras can be time consuming (yes, I know some vendors have some config tools that make this easier). These are the reasons Synology can charge what they do for these cameras because that all goes away. Everything is set up, and managed, right from Surveillance Station and I can bring a new camera online, update firmware, and be done in less than 5 minutes. My time and sanity is worth the cost difference. Having NDAA compliance is also a nice touch: while, not technically not required for my needs, it makes me feel better. Of course, part of what you also pay for is the license which is included (or rather not needed) with the Synology branded camera. That's a bummer for me because I already bought the licenses but it will likely be a plus for you. I've only installed two, as a pilot, so far. I hope they will prove to be reliable and will then implement more as I swap out the defective Reolink cameras. I'm having some headlight/tail light ghosting with one of the cameras so I need to check that out. I'll clean the lens and then contact Synology if it remains a problem. The built in people and vehicle detection works pretty well (with minimal tweaking) although it has a hard time picking up people (even moving) more than about 30 feet from the camera. Not a huge issue for me because I have pretty good coverage with other cameras spread out but it might be for you if you're only using a couple in your setup. At the time of this writing, Amazon (not a third party seller) is selling these for more than MSRP. Also at the time of this writing, you can obtain the camera at its MSRP if you look around. It's like Synology knew the maximum amount I would be willing to pay for a camera of this quality because their MSRP is it for me. I don't believe it is worth any more than that.
