Toshiba X300 Pro 3.5" 4 GB Serial ATA III

Was a little put off going from an ssd to a spinning disk again, but the x300 pro is just as fast if not faster than the samsung evo 870 it replaced. I now have 6x the storage and didn't lose any speed.. i'd call that a win.. update: unfortunately this batch of drives isn't as good as the prior set.. while it does still work, it's significantly lost speed vs the other drive. To the point where this is now my secondary storage hard disk. still give it 3 stars, but it's now no where near as fast as the SSD it replaced. I am guessing here, but it seems as though they really are fast on a single platter read/write, but not great once you start to stack on data. note: the system in question for reference is: i5 12th gen, noctua cooler, 128gb ddr4 3200, 750watt power supply, linux ubuntu 22.04, nvidea RTX 3060, and two of these drives on a pcie sata connector with raid 1.

I added this as a backup for my sold state drive and it has been working flawlessly and quietly. The price was good enough.

Got it for 135 cad on around black friday. 33.75 dollars per tb of 7200 rpm storage . The pro version seemingly provides exactly the same stats except an explaination that its "built to last" coupled with I believe a 4 year warranty compared to the 2 year warranty of the original model. The thing is that toshiba makes some of the most reliable drives out there with an average 1 percent annual failure rate average across their drives according to the stats on the cloud storage provider backblaze and is only outclassed by hitachi with a 0.42 annual failure rate. So to have something created for reliability by a company that already makes reliable drives makes a very pleasant combination with enough speed to do anything you want. I'm looking forward to this drive serving me well for years and years. Lastly, even though this drive is "reliable" as in way more reliable than others no drive is reliable and you should always back up your data onto low rpm cheap storage. Tldr: Great value for great speed, and insane reliability. Recomended for active storage of programs and games with a small ssd for the operating system.

Been in computers since the late 1970s. Did 1.1tb copy from an existing drive to the x300 pro immediately upon installing. works as a hdd should. I inadvertenly, regrettably, puchased 3 SMR 4tb drives from another manufacturer. The Toshiba X300 pro exhibits No SMR b.s. (where those drives slow to below dial up speeds, then they stop... then what?) Consistent throughput throughout the process. Recommended for video, audio, virtual machine backups, anything. Plan to purchase another.
