NAS & Storage Servers

I specifically asked QNAP if I needed any adapters to mount ssd drives in this. They said no. I guess that is true, but you do need screws and they did not come with the case or the Samsung ssd drives. This will be my 3rd SNAP Raid enclosure. The previous 2 were 4 bay and I went with a fancy level of raid. However, both of the enclosures failed before the drives did. So I decided to go with 2 bays and will just configure this for mirrored.

Though in general I like the QNAP hardware, this particular unit though gave up after 4 weeks. After a restart of the device it did not boot anymore and was dead in the water, nothing could be done to revive it. QNAP customer support for this device was horrible, they did never get back to me after an automated e-mail response. Phone support is not possible, you end up in a long waiting line... Nevertheless I was able to return the unit to Amazon directly, which was good.

Purchased the ts-262 and the memory is removable and came with 2 dimm slots. Qnap need to fix their description and replace all their marketing fokes. This one better not die like the ts-351. What a disappointment

I purchased the 4-bay, 2 GB memory version which allowed me to instantly pop in the 16 GB of RAM I already had laying around. I didn't even boot up QTS because I originally wanted to build an ubuntu server with zfs support. While it's a bit weak on the CPU side, I want a flexible and reliable storage solution with high capacity instead of high performance. It doesn't have ECC RAM support which might be an issue for zfs but it's a budget solution for home use anyway and not a real storage server. The RAM and SSDs are very easy to install, slots are accessible. The BIOS supports booting from USB and the SSDs right away so the pre-installed OS can be just ignored. Ubuntu server minimal was up and running in 20 seconds. The fan is a bit noisier than I expected, I'm considering upgrading it to noctua or similar in the future.

I tried the highly-rated Synology first and I could not get that thing to work right and returned it after a month of trying. This QNAP one seems a whole lot easier to set up and use. A couple months in and I think I'm figuring things out. Recommend.
