When Software-based Drive Cloning Fails, This Device Is Stellar. A Computer Geek's Must Have.

I have four identical laptops that are used for my personal business. I update one to Windows 10 Pro, reinstalled all the productivity software, power toys, and custom configurations. Imaging having to do that with three more laptops? The time. The efforts. The proclivity for errors. I first tried A"k"ronis. Then A"E"omi. Both failed to clone more disks properly. I then took a flyer on this product and although it is slower than the software solutions, it is exact, correct, and pitifully easy. In one day, I had all identical laptops operating identically... perfectly. This device now resides in a place of honor on my computer workbench.

A Good News / Bad News Product

Please don't think that I am bashing this product, I am not. It is well made and easy to use but it has limitations for my usage. Since I am not an electrical engineer I made no attempt at diagnosing the problem that I encountered. Nor did I contact tech support since this is a sealed self contained system there is little if anything that could be done. Background: I purchased this product to make an image copy of my NAS backup drive for off site storage. The time requirements for the image copy must be less than 24 hours so the backup disk will be ready for the evening NAS backup process. The source and target drives are identical Seagate 8TB SATA Ironwolf drives. The source drive currently has 1.995TB of data. What I expected was a transfer rate of 6GB/minute as described. What I found was completely different. I initiated an image copy of the drive and the initial transfer rate was close to my expectations. after an hour of running I estimated that the image copy would take a total of 7.5 hours to complete. This was slower than expected but within my requirements. After 8 hours I check again and the copy was not complete. I recalculated the expected completion time and it was estimated to be approximately 20 hours of total run time. But, that also was not true. In the end it took 42 hours and 49 minutes to copy just 2 TB of data. 2 TB of data represents just 25% of the approximate capacity of 8TB (yes, I am using round numbers). Obviously, this did not meet my time requirements. My observations: as the amount of remaining data decreased the amount of time needed to copy each GB increased. Conclusion: if you do not have a time constraint or the amount of data to be copied is less than 250GB then this is an excellent product. However, if you need you disks freed up and ready for use by a specified period of time then I would recommend looking for an alternative solution. No, I do not have one yet.

Unit works nice. Made copies of the hard drives on my two Windows 7 computers. Fast and copies were identical to original drives. Definitely recommend.
